The Obstetric Anaesthetists Association Project Grant

The successful applicant for the OAA Project Grant was:

Principle Applicant
Dr F Plaat
Consultant Anaesthetist, Queen Charlotte's and Chelsea Hospital

Title of project
UKOSS Study of Obstetric Epidural Haematoma

Amount
£12,000

Abstract
The true incidence of epidural haematoma in the obstetric population is unknown. Retrospective studies suggest the incidence is very low. UKOSS has been designed and is used to detect conditions occurring with less frequency than 1:2000 of the UK population and would therefore be suitable for a prospective study. The increasing use of Low Molecular Weight Heparin follows guidance from national bodies but there is no scientific basis for the timing of epidural placement or removal. In addition means of measuring abnormal coagulation appropriately are not always available. The availability of diagnostic imaging and neurosurgical advice is not known nationally.
