Cardiac biomarkers in ICT patients: what do they mean?

Summary: The role of the velocity and/or magnitude of small changes in cardiac troponin (cTnI) seen commonly in ICU patients is not known. We are measuring sequential levels of cTnI and other cardica biomarkers, N terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-pro-BNP ) and H-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP) and relating these to ECG changes in ICU patients. Results from each biomarker will be analysed for clinical sensitivity, specificity, and positive/negative predictive value, alone and in combination. Ethical committee approval has been obtained and patient recruitment is underway.
